How I Motivate Myself To Quit Smoking

If you are still smoking cigarettes and are seriously considering quitting, you have to ask yourself: "Am I really ready to kick the smoking habit? Am I confident I can do it successfully?" Two conditions are absolutely essential if you are going to be a successful quitter:

  • You must be highly motivated to quit.
  • You must be confident in your ability to do it.
It's possible to be motivated to quit, but to waver for a couple of reasons. Because quitting can be rather uncomfortable, and cigarettes have been fulfilling an important function in your life, it's natural to debate the pros and cons of giving them up. And since most people who try to quit fall in any given attempt and need to try several times before they are successful, it's natural to lack absolute confidence in your ability to succeed, especially if you have failed one or more times in the past. Thus, a lack of confidence can actually undermine your motivation.

In case you are wavering, or thinking of putting off your quit date, let me remind you of certain statistics about smoking and some immediate benefits of quitting. I hope these will convince you that "now' is the right time to carry through with your intentions. If you continue to smoke cigarettes, here are the risks:

  • You will be 12 times more likely to die from lung cancer
  • You will be 10 times more likely to die from other lung diseases.
  • You will be 10 times more likely to die from cancer of the larynx
  • You will be 6 times more likely to die from cancer of the mouth
  • You will be twice as likely to die of heart disease
  • You will be twice as likely to die of a stroke
Reflect for a moment: Wouldn't it be extremely important for you to increase your chances, from two to twelve times, of gaining many extra healthy, happy, pain-free years in place of the long-term suffering and thousands of dollars in medical expenses associated with this list of illness?
